Pur non prevedendo delle propedeuticità obbligatorie, per la comprensione degli argomenti dell'insegnamento di Patologia vegetale è auspicabile che lo studente o la studentessa abbia sostenuto l'esame di Biologia generale e botanica e che abbia seguito gli insegnamenti di Botanica forestale e di Elementi di fisiologia vegetale.

Obiettivi formativi
L'insegnamento ha lo scopo di completare la formazione del laureato in Scienze Forestali e Ambientali in riferimento a conoscenze e competenze di carattere fitopatologico. L'insegnamento intende fornire le conoscenze di base sulle malattie non parassitarie e sulla biologia, sull'epidemiologia e l'ecologia dei principali agenti di malattie infettive (virus, batteri, funghi, piante superiori) delle piante forestali in foresta e fuori foresta.
L'insegnamento intende inoltre fornire i rudimenti di diagnostica fitopatologica e le competenze per per poter impostare interventi di difesa fitosanitaria, con particolare riferimento a quelli di natura selvicolturale, biologica ed integrata.
The course will provide knowledge and competence in the field of plant pathology to students of the BSc Degree in Forest and Environmental Sciences. The course will provide the knowledge on abiotic diseases and on the biology, epidemiology and ecology of the main infectious agents (viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasitic plants) affecting trees in forests and urban settings.
In addition, the course will provide the basic knowledge on plant disease diagnosis and competences to define appropriate management strategies and tactics, with emphasis on those based on silvicultural, biological and integrated approaches.

Acquisizione dei fondamenti per il riconoscimento delle principali malattie delle piante forestali e per una loro corretta gestione fitosanitaria.
Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione
L’insegnamento fornirà a studentesse e studenti gli strumenti per:
- Capire su quali basi è fondata la patologia vegetale forestale
- Comprendere i processi e i meccanismi secondo i quali si diffondono le malattie infettive delle piante forestali
- Capire come determinati interventi possano prevenire l'insorgenza o curare malattie
Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione applicate
Alla fine dell’insegnamento, studenti e studentesse saranno in grado di:
- Interpretare correttamente un quadro sintomatologico ed effettuare diagnosi su base visiva
- Impostare programmi di difesa fitopatologica in foresta e fuori foresta

Alla fine dell'insegnamento studentesse e studenti saranno in grado di impostare, in piena autonomia, una diagnosi fitopatologica e programmi di difesa fitopatologica in foresta e fuori foresta

Learn the ropes for the diagnosis of the main diseases of forest trees and for their management.

The course will provide students with tools to:
- Understand the bases of forest pathology
- Understand the mechanisms underlying the spread of forest pathogens
- Understand how human interventions may help preventing diseases from occurring or cure diseases
Applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Interpret correctly symptoms of diseases and perform diagnosis on a visual basis
- Design plant disease management programmes wherever forest trees are present
Making judgements
At the end of the course, students will be able to design and perform, autonomously, a diagnosis of plant diseases and isease management programmes wherever forest trees are present
Communication skills
At the end of the course, students will be able: - to support and motivate their choices with a clear exposition; - to acquire a specific technical and scientific vocabulary
Learning skill
The concepts learned will allow students to apply their knowledge autonomously to manage correctly forest diseases wherever forest trees are present

- Symptomatology and plant disease diagnosis
- Pathogenesis and disease resistance
- Epidemiology of infectious diseases
- Ecology and ecological role of forest pathogens and emerging forest diseases
- General strategies of forest protection with emphasis on those based on silvicultural, biological and integrated approaches, and with hints of chemical control
- Non-infectious forest diseases associated with climat, soil and toxins
- Infectious diseaseas caused by viruses, phytoplasmas, bacteria and oomycetes

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento
L'apprendimento dei principali concetti dell'insegnamento e delle relazioni tra i diversi argomenti sarà verificata in itinere mediante domande poste dal docente all'intera classe o a studenti e studentesse scelti/e a caso e/o mediante test con domande a risposta aperta e multipla, seguendo un modello didattico il più possibile interattivo.
L'esame dell'insegnamento è orale. Durante l'esame sarà accertata la capacità di interpretare sintomi e/o di effettuare diagnosi.
Learning of the main concepts of the course and the connections among topics will be verified continuously through questions asked by the teacher to the entire class or to randomly selected students and/or through a written test, according to an interactive learning model.
Oral examinantion. During the examination the ability to describe symptoms and make a diagnosis will be assessed.
